Twist & shout!
When my best friend told me she had joined a 60s dance troupe, I’m not quite sure what I envisioned, she’s the same friend who has taken classes in everything from burlesque to Bollywood and that’s only the tip of the iceberg of her energetic endeavours. I suppose I imagined a retro flashmob doing the ‘mashed potato’ jauntily down King’s Road, and I secretly hope I’m not far off. In the group, there’s high flying fashion editors, charity executives, a real mix of women, and they’ve all found a common love of the swinging sixties. I couldn’t think of a more wonderful way to make friends (and no doubt get very fit!).
The Actionettes are an all-shimmying, all-colourful dance troupe dedicated to fabulous hits of the 60s. They’ve performed at the BFI, Design Museum, V&A to name but a few and travel far and wide spreading their synchronised hoopla, and even Jarvis Cocker is an affirmed fan. If this season’s revival of all things retro is anything to go by, they’ll be in high demand. In Vogue’s A-Z of S/S 13 trends, S is for the sixties, with everyone from Louis Vuitton to Moschino lining up to showcase geometric prints and bakelite plastic costume jewellery. Madmen is firmly back on the TV agenda with a new series which is to be set in the 60s, and the likes of Lana Del Ray have set the trendsetting agenda for heavy set eyeliner and the beehive up-do, so it’s suffice to say the era is making a firm style revival.
Here they are in The Pipettes video (who I absolutely love!) for Boo Shuffle:
My friend is keeping tight lipped about what to expect but their next gig is at the William Morris Gallery on May 16 but if these sneak peak photos are anything to go by, it will be anything but dull.
